Journey of my life – JNP

Since after I joint into teaching at Jigme Namgyel Polytechnic, the place becomes the center of learning and living for me. Jigme Namgyel Polytechnic, as the name indicates, it has connection to the history before monarchy and today as our great kings continues to support the development of the institute, it becomes the center of hopes for the nation and the citizens. It was great privilege and an opportunity for me to serve the one and only polytechnic institute in the country. I was determined to dedicate my life in serving the institute in whatever little ways I can to make a difference.
Jigme Namgyel Polytechnic, formally known as Royal Bhutan Polytechnic was started in the year 1974 and was the first technical institute in the country offering diploma programme in engineering.  It was located 18 kilometers away from Samdrup Jongkhar, second gateway to Bhutan from Assam in India and shopping destination for the people of east. Today we have 741 students, 25% girls and 45 teaching staff supported by 56 non-teaching staff all working towards making Jigme Namgyel Polytechnic the Centre of Excellence. The various courses offer by the institute are Diploma in Civil Engineering, Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Diploma in Electronic and Communication Engineering, Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Diploma in Computer Hardware and Networking and Diploma in Surveying. I was very fortunate enough to get to work as an assistant lecturer under Diploma in Civil Engineering and Surveying.  By the next academic year, BE in Power Engineering and Diploma in Procurement and Material Management will be offered.
JNP Staff with Honourable Tshogpen
We have very farsighted visionary leaders; director supported by deans, managing the institute for excellence in its function. Professional upgrade of the teachers, academic excellence and good behavior among students and infrastructure developments of the institute were the top priority as a mission to fulfill.

I found that the senior faculties were very supportive in any kinds of help that we need as a new faculty. They are friendly in nature and doesn’t behave to create any gap between us. Some of them said, once we join Jigme Namgyel Polytechnic, we will never feel like to go away. This is what truly happening to me today. I was made to play almost all the games facilities available. Starting from lawn tennis which I have seen only in television and youtube, table tennis, badminton, basketball, volley ball and football which I think is never meant for me before. During my four years of stay at CST, I have never touch those games accept football for two or three times and now within four months of times at JNP, I have developed so much enthusiasm to play all the games and I am very happy for the changed. Thanks to all the senior faculties for your encouragement and supports.

Another reason for me to like about JNP is my friends. They are like my family and we eat, drinks, laugh, sing a song and sleep in a single house. Thanks for your wonderful company. I had a friend who cooks well like a mother and support like a brother. There are sometimes things to hurt but never take it serious. Cooking early in the morning, packing lunch for the office are some wonderful things we have done, though as a bachelor everyone expect us without breakfast every day in the office. Thank you once again Vasker and Indira.
With my friends
The residential where I live is known as Thangzor, derived from the hilly and plain in nature of the place where all sports facilities are available. Thangzorpas are well known for the coorporation they give to each other in times of help and kind of togetherness they had for enjoyment so called family gathering. I am very happy to be part of Thangzorpa and I really did enjoy your welcome dinner when we first join as Thangzorpa. There are lots of unique things that families of Dewathang do in terms of social gathering and I really did liked the tradition of Sharchoppas arra being the first in discussion to proceed for any gathering. Thank you all Thangzorpas and I am very fortunate to be part of you all. Hoping for the great days ahead.
Thangzorpas gathering
After getting job, I got huge responsibility to carry on. Firstly my family who has been eagerly waiting and hoping with great expectation from me. They want me to help them here after and I thinking that I am doing it without fail. As a lecturer in the institute, I have the responsibility to take care of my students and I have given my heart for it. So far of my stay here, I had a great time taking responsibilities. The response of the students had really encourage me to continue with the job and I am really determine to do so.
Thank you my parents, teachers, friends and almighty god for the good health and the good things that I am able to do for it fulfills my dreams and I am hoping and praying for my dreams to keep fulfilling.

Teaching as my Career-JNP

As a school going kid my ambition was to become a teacher. It may be because I know only about teachers or may be because it’s my fate. My ambition remain unchanged until my class XII result was declared and I was asked to join one of the premium engineering college in the country-CST. I choose to join the college although my ambition was different because there were no one to guide me and all I know about was that if I choose to join engineering college, it’s a better option for my future. Changing my ambition from becoming a teacher to an engineer didn’t have any regret in me, so I choose to become an engineer.

Four years of courses in civil engineering was successfully completed. My lingering thoughts and wishes to become an engineer and support my families was about to accomplish. Then I was thinking, what kind of life I would be living beyond supporting my families? About my own family in the future, the meaningful life I wanted to live and the things that I can do to make my life meaningful. Of course there will not be a great thing that an ordinary person like me can do for this world but I got a strong believe in myself that I can do it greatly in my own small ways to make some difference. Then the thoughts of becoming a teacher came again to me. By becoming an engineer, there will be a great sense of achievement and responsibility of leading a meaningful life but becoming a teacher has more than that in life.

While saying so, my passion for engineering never dies. Studying engineering was my passion and now teaching as a career becomes my interest in life. Many people objected my idea of becoming a teacher. They want me to become an engineer and earn more. Still people talks the same wherever I met with them. It was the interest that I have for my career that holds me strong to believe in myself than to whatever others have to say for me.

Now it’s been few months past teaching to my students. Things are happening beyond my expectation and my interest into teaching grew day by day. For the successful days so far, I wanted to thank all my teachers for teaching me values in life, friends for all kinds of help, my family for your immense support in my studies and almighty god for all.

One Happy Moment in My Life-Graduation Day

Graduation day was one of the happiest moment in my life. Not only because I am graduating but also because my father make his presence on the day. Indeed it was beyond words can describe to express happiness out of your presence. It was unexpected that the father who survived with single dialect (sharchop), who don’t have any idea of the world beyond his visibility and rarely travelled distant places has decided to make his presence on the graduation day of his eldest son.
With graduation certificates
He has travelled all the way from far flung village of Trashiyangtse to the College of Science and Technology, Phuntsholing, just to wish his son a HAPPY GRADUATION DAY and as a token of happiness, presented me with gifts. Thank you father for making the day great and to all my family; I am thanking you all for the gifts. I felt immensely great and happy to be part of you all's life.
With my father at CST
I would also like to thank all the teachers who came into my life for you have taught me, scolded me to make me into what I am today. Thanks to all those who are related to me for your valuable supports and encouragement. Without any supports and help from you all, it’s impossible for me to be able to make this joyous day of celebration.

It was my pleasure to sit with my father, take photographs and get advices on this great day. I am very happy and all my friends are happy too to see you together with us to celebrate the day. Your supports for my studies are immense, and whatever I asked for, you make everything possible for me. I would like to say that the graduation is for you my father and your presence is everything that makes my day.
On the way from CST to Thimphu
I had a wonderful and unforgettable graduation day which was one occasion in my life that I have been waiting to come and that I would cherished to remember as a great day hereafter. On this joyous day of my life, I could enjoy the day remembering those hardship I have been through for last eighteen years and indeed I found the day very important to celebrate to realize the importance of the hardship in one’s life. Also I came to realize that life is not so easy to live as long as one wish to live it worthwhile and those who live it so easily are not worth of being human. No matter what comes on your way, things are not to be taken easily for it is not and hard work is the only key to success.

I know, celebrating this day is not the end, it was just one success stories of my life which is the start of another journey of success in my life. To be successful and to celebrate yet another such joyous day, hard work and the blessings of almighty and love and care of my beloved ones are very important. Looking forward for continued support from everyone I am relating to and I would continue to give my best wherever I am and whatever I do in my life.

Goenba ~ Only Place of Visit for Refreshing

In my middle secondary and high school days, I had an interest of visiting holy places by taking long walk through valleys and forest but after reaching CST, this charm was completely lost because I cannot see other than one and only place to visit every time. However I believe the almighty god of this goenpa (holy place) had heard my prayers every time and helped me to complete my college life without having any unfortunate ill effect.

Kharbandi Goenba

This goenba is the only place to visit for refreshing mind of CST students after listening to long lectures and concentration on the studies for the whole tiresome day. Visiting time are usually from 5pm till 7pm for CST student and it is the best spot for Indian tourist.

Hundreds of Indian tourist visit goenba every day, mainly because they don’t have to cross the immigration check post and the whole Jaigoan town can be best view from goenba which they enjoy the most by capturing the views through cameras. Whenever I happened to come to Phuntsholing later on, this place would be one I won’t miss it to make a visit for another time.

Beautiful View of Sun Set from Goenba

My Stay in CST

My stay in CST for last four years has taught me good lessons to tackle different kinds of problems and ovoid obstacles to lead a meaningful life ahead. I had a difficult times not being able to grasp the ideas of the subjects and unable to perform well in exams. I have also gone through good times of enjoyment and met good friends who had helped me in millions ways to be able to graduate on time.

I had an opportunity to interact with lecturers, professors and special guest from diverse background of knowledge and nationality through lectures, presentations and talks. There are many friends met through Facebook, some are good friends, few are not and some can’t find word to describe. Everything that has happened during my stay at CST will be the memories that I would cherished for the rest of my life.

Hostels

We are taught first with humanities and science modules including Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, English and Dzongkha under the department of Humanities and Science. It was easy for me to pass all the modules accept Mathematics which gave me tough time to get pass marks of 50% and I could only manage to score maximum of 52% out of four engineering mathematics module. Doing away with engineering mathematics is like being able to climb on Mount Everest was what I felt.

Civil Engineering Modules

Then comes the engineering modules under Civil Engineering Department. All the modules were so hard to understand particularly for me. Sometimes I assumed that my brain has got capacity limits in terms of understanding engineering science and doing analysis and calculations. Of all the modules, structural mechanics was the toughest. I had to do back paper assessment for both structural mechanics I and II and the maximum score was 52% and that also with maximum hard working. I enjoyed almost all the engineering modules though scorings are very less and it was my patience to know about engineering. Building drawings and designing was what I enjoyed the most.

Taking rest ~The time when I was busy with final year project work
Without the selfless help of the lecturers and their hard work and determination to make us a good student, I won’t be as proud as I have been today. To all my lecturers, technicians and other staff, I salute you all for your kind help and supports and wherever I am, I would never forget to pray for your continued good health and long live. Thanks to you all.

Civil Engineering Faculties and Technicians

While coming to the enjoyment, college picnic is one of the occasion where we used to enjoy to the fullest. Usually named as welcome picnic for first years during winter semesters and as farewell picnic for final years during summer semesters. When I recollect back, I remembered that I have never missed a single such occasions and it really indicates that I have enjoyed those times meant for enjoyment which give me sense of no regret. Special lunch, interactions with new faces, gossiping among friends, playing games involving mass participation and jam up where some of the items for enjoyment. Finally the day used to end with soft and hard drinks where we used to shout and scream to the extreme tone with the sense of joy in it.

Farewell picnic~Tursa Khola

The thing I liked about being one of the CSTians is that nobody bothers what happened during such occasion the next day and everybody will be in their own world concentrating on studies until another day of such enjoyment comes.

Jam up session is another occasion of such enjoyment. Everybody enjoy this night as if it was their last night to be together. I felt it was an important occasion for us to gain confidence and a way to enjoy as “one world one people” with rest of the people around the world because it was a common form of enjoyment pick up by people irrespective of age and popularly known as Party Night.

Four years has now come to an end and felt like it’s a dream. Though the journey was too long, I never felt it really took that much because of numbers of assignments, presentations and tests that kept me busy throughout. Successfully completing the final year project work determines the potentiality of an engineering student to become real engineer. We had to put in lots of hard work, undergo high pressure, experienced severe tension and anxiety while doing research and then presenting to the panel member formed by civil engineering department faculty where we had to developed self-disciplined in front of them. Everything that I had to undergo, whether I felt good or not, ultimately has helped me to become what I am today.

I felt proud of being able to make it to the final year and successfully completing the project work which was the biggest challenge I have ever faced.

“Where I want to be?”- Mr. Ramen Preet’s Presentation Summary

I really did enjoy the presentation given by Executive Director, Mr. Raman Preet from Pune Institute of Business Management (PIBM). It was awesome and encouraged most of us at this point of time when in the verge of graduation and with the fear of job scarcity and dilemma to choose the suitable career in life. It gives me a sense of relaxation and out of worries after his wonderful talk. The core message from his talk was the understanding of “Where I want to be?” after graduation

He starts his presentation by asking questions “What is your goal?” and “What have you done to achieve it” but none of us couldn't answer it with confidence. It was an embarrassing moment for all of us but he continued by telling us that from today will be the right time for us to think about it and he would help us how to proceed because it is high time that we need to have goals and do something to achieve it.

I would like to keep note of his aspiring wisdom of knowledge that has encouraged me and many others in finding our goals and choosing the career.

As a fresh graduates, we will have two goals in our mind; to create a company and to join a good company, where both will lead us to get employed. This requires four main skills of good communication, basic IT skills, domain skills and aptitude skills. Good communication plays an important role in convincing business ideas, where drafting of ideas into presentation and presenting with confidence is crucial. Excel is considered one of the basic IT skills required because of its multipurpose functional to keep any kinds of data for manipulation. Being a civil engineer, having knowledge of civil engineering subjects is domain skills and one’s level of intelligence and unique attitude towards one’s career is the aptitude skills. If this four basic skills is acquired along with the basic knowledge of companies, projects and infrastructures development within the South Asia region or within India and Bhutan, opportunities into business is 100%.

Since Bhutan is a developing country and its infrastructures are in the process of development, there are lots of opportunities for engineers to explore new ideas and apply into business. Bhutanese graduates are not so eager about exploring one’s ideas and creating new things but searching for jobs which may not be up to their interest at times. The reason behind could be because of the unawareness and less exposure into larger business companies outside Bhutan. So, he encourage us to work in larger companies in India to learn about their business ideas and then creating a company back in to Bhutan. India having lots of world leading companies which requires 70% to 80% of working group as engineers, learning from their experienced will be of greater help to Bhutan.

Creating a company is making a product out of it. There are lots of opportunities for Bhutanese engineers because Bhutan don’t have many products of its own, mainly the infrastructure development. For example, paving tile manufacturing, cement brick etc. If in India, creating of such company would be of lesser chance of success because there are many such companies existing.

With this little ideas into mind and creating a vision about our goals of life will give you answers to the question “Where I want to be”.

Once into the business, we should work hard wholeheartedly because engineering requires extra hard work to success and if not there is a greater risk of losing it. He shared an interesting story of how success comes in to one’s life,

” There were two man of same profession, grade and standard working in a company. One evening, light went off before working time and they locked the door and went home riding bicycle.

After an about 10 miles passed, they came to know that lighting switch were left on. Mr. A asked Mr. B about returning back to the company to switch off the lights but Mr. B refused saying that they can do it tomorrow morning because they will be there before the owner, so owner will have no idea of keeping lights on for the whole night. But then Mr. A refused and went back to switch off the light while Mr. B headed towards home.

After ten years, they met at the same spot, Mr. B with still a bicycle and Mr. A with Mercedes car. Mr. B was surprised and asked about how he changed from the same level of bicycle to Mercedes like the owner of the company. Then Mr. B replied with the smile saying that he has been the owner of that company since last ten years”.

So working attitude like Mr. A in the story will lead you to many success stories in life.

Engineers plays an important role in the development of the company. Therefore updating knowledge of diverse background according to the requirement of the company is very important which is called application oriented training where engineers are trained according to the activity required to conduct in the company.

Every company as a whole works under four branches; operations, human resources, finance and marketing. Under operations is our field works with labors in the case of construction and infrastructure development and having number of workers to control over is human resources management. Financial sanction for the engineering infrastructure development needs thorough analysis of the project which requires engineering knowledge and project as a whole is manage through project management system which includes marketing. Therefore, it is very important to update knowledge in various background for engineers to play a greater role and this can be done only by engineers because engineers are meant to do it.

For marketing, various required knowledge updates are; channel management, retail management, retail banking and market research. For finance, commercial banking, equity research, corporate finance and investment banking. This are very important knowledge required to become manager of a larger company and it will matters a lot. All this knowledge based courses are provided by the Pune Institute of Business Management (PIBM), India.

Above mentioned are summary of little things I can grasp out of fabulous presentation made by Mr. Raman Preet and it gives me an immense pleasure to recollect and jot it down. The purpose in to get reminded of myself of his presentation which I felt would guide me in developing good thinking attitude during the times of my career. Because of my poor language and writing skills, the pages become this much long which someone could have expressed it in few paragraph. So it will be bored to read but main message it has to convey very important to me.

Lastly, I would like to thank Mr. Raman for his wonderful presentation which would change my way of thinking and attitudes towards future career and also thanks to DRIL (Dean Research of Industrial Linkages) of College of Science and Technology for making such arrangement.

How I came to create this blog - Simple

I created this blog on the day when exam stresses made me feel something different than usual. Just wanted to browse through anything and keep away from the stresses and exam phobia for some time. In doing so, suddenly the idea of blogging strikes my mind and this really did this work for me, I was completely out of stresses when I completed creating this blog.

So, let me wait and see what I can do with this blog later on. Definitely I will have some idea at some point of time when similar stresses or any emotional sentiment makes me think about many strange things that seems important to write it down, so that i can read it later on.

Actually not good at writing and i always wished for improvement.

I have learned something by being able to create and getting started with blogging, hope will learn lot more in times to come.

So, HAPPY BLOGGING!!!
